Dolphins come across as very gentle creatures. when we fed them at Tangalooma, they can across as shy yet friendly fishes who knew what they were doing. This article portrays a very interesting aspect to their personality.

Dolphins are gentle and very smart. Apart from tourists swimming and feeding them, in some places children with mental disability (not sure what kind) are made to swim with dolphins as a part of their treatment. But after all they are wild. They have been known to be aggressive and even the pet ones have been documented to have attacked their trainers and tourists swimming with them.

I was shocked to read about this personality trait of such cute and friendly creatures. Killing own family members is truly a wild trait. However the fact that ’The motives for such attacks are unclear, although scientists have considered that competition for declining food stocks may trigger the behaviour’ seems to alarming. The ecosystem is titling and affecting these gentle creatures.

Declining food does change animal behavior and the survival of the fittest theory stands proved. But most of the times the scarcity lasts for few months after which things calm down. Hope that happens in this case too.
