Hey Deepa, waste and garbage coming to India is not as bad as it sounds. The economics makes it more viable to send them to countries like India rather than process them in developed countries. Its a win-win proposition. There are companies importing e-waste to process them here as it is cheap and processing companies can make good money out of it. The problem however is toxic wastes, plastics, harmful chemicals, etc that are also dumped here. There has to be a proper regulation and control of whats coming in, but as with everything else, there are people wanting to make fast bucks and so such hazardous wastes also find their way here. If done correctly, waste management can be as good as outrourced BPOs and KPOs.

Exactly. I dont think the law here is strict with the whole recycling system. India cannot manage its own waste and garbage, then how can it manage to take care of other countries thrash?

Thats exactly the problem. Because of few vision less people, our country is missing out on so many opportunities that globalisation has brought about.
And as mentioned in this article, apart from toxic and plastic danger, we also have major issue of reuse of containers, bottles etc without proper treatment and precautions, which can lead to severe health and life risk... Wonder what it will take to change India.

Yes,Deepa its five times cheaper to dump instead of going for processing and recycle.India remained a attractive dumping ground since last 40 yrs.
Mettalic waste, electronic waste, plastic and polymer, paper etc are reaching Indian ports since long.

Hi Nishi, that’s exactly what i feel. But then the as Manish has mentioned here that many companies are doing it to make money for their own pockets. They care a hoot about our country or our environment.

Guess this applies to our government as whole. Thats y no strict rules and regulations for such activity.

Infact TOI in Mumbai today carried this same topic fwd and it says that this specific village where the garbage is dumped is labeled as ’world’s dustbin’.
